Our Speaker Today
Mr. Tom Dean - USS Midway
We were delighted to have Mr. Tom Dean speak to our club today representing the USS Midway Museum.

Tom was introduced by his good friend, and our distinguished club member,  Vince Bacino.
Tom did a superb job of bringing the history of the USS Midway to our consciousness.  As a dedicated volunteer with the museum, Tom has given over 5,000 hours of his time to the Midway.

Tom shared some very interesting facts with us.  For instance,  did you know:
  • The USS Midway was commissioned just 2 weeks AFTER World War II ended in 1945.
  • She was the first ship built that did not fit through the Panama Canal.
  • The Midway was the first ship to carry nuclear weapons.
  •  In 1972, she was the first american ship to be home-ported in Japan at Yokuska.  She served 3 tours in Vietnam.
  • Her last deployment was as the Admiral's Flag Ship in 1991 for Desert Storm.  Then after a 47 year reign, she was retired.
  • The USS Midway was brought to San Diego in January, 2004 and in June of that year the museum opened with over 800,000 people visiting in her first year.  in 2013, over 1 million people enjoyed her.
  • The USS Midway is now the MOST VISITED attraction in San Diego.
  • The Midway hosts over 700 public events each year and over 400 "active duty" military events.

Interesting Factoid
Tom Dean, our speaker today, just happens to be the husband of one of our distinguished past club members ,and past club President, Marge Dean.  Tom shared with us that it was Marge's mother, who was the very first female Rotarian in history.

  • Alison Cummings - St. Mad's is holding its 3rd annual Tea By The Sea.  Alison, Ginger, and Carol are all sponsoring tables.  Please see one of them if you are interested in going.  Act fast.  This is a wonderful event and has completely sold out every year.

  • Cheryl Minshew - Cheryl shared an extremely interesting fact with us - One of the last three remaining countries on Earth with active Polio is Pakistan.  In 2014, there were 304 cases of new Polio.  Just two years later, in 2016 that number had dropped to 14.  Sooooooo Close!

  • Jamie Lundy - Jamie reminded everyone that the International Governors meeting starts this weekend and it is important that we volunteer to be greeters for the incoming Governors and their spouse as they travel from all over the world to visit us here in San Diego.  We are incredibly fortunate to host this event each year.  Let's welcome them with pride!  Volunteer!  Register on the District web site
