Reading Program    Reading Labs  •   Math Labs     Vocational  •  RYLA

Dear Rotary Club and Mr. Errett,

A very heartfelt thank you for your generosity in funding the Rotary Reader program at Meridian Elementary School.  The students grew in their reading abilities in measurable ways.  They were so excited to receive the books and certificates from you.  One girl told me that her mother had already framed the certificate.  A boy said that his grandma was so proud, she offered to buy him more books.  These children receive almost no public recognition for academics, so your efforts are extremely meaningful to them.

I started in February as their tutor and the kids went from, "Do I have to read?" to "When is it my turn to read?  I like reading!" on our last day.  I am so proud of them and so thankful to you.

Sincerely,
Julie Kennedy

  ·       The Rotary Elementary School Reading Program.   Established in 1976 by Rotarian Vince Bacino, this program serves 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders at five elementary schools in the Cajon Valley School District.  At an annual  cost of $12,000 to $15,000, the Rotary Reading Program has helped thousands of our children to improve their reading skills through daily tutoring and small-group activities.

·       The Rotary Middle School Reading Lab.  Piloted last year at Montgomery Middle School, the El Cajon Rotary Club supported this innovative motivational reading program to challenge over 500 students to increase their reading rates and comprehension by reading entertaining books, taking personalized computer-scored tests, and receiving prizes and other incentives for their improvement.  Library book check-outs have increased by over 300% as a result of this program.  Due to the overwhelming success of this program, the school is expanding the program  to allow even more students to benefit from participation this year.

  ·   The Rotary Accelerated Math Labs.  Last year a grant from Rotary was awarded to Greenfield Middle School to design, purchase equipment for, and operate a hands-on Accelerated Math Lab. This new lab provides individualized computerized assistance to  students needing special attention in basic math skills, general math, and pre-algebra skills.  The immediate improvement in most students’ understanding has resulted in significantly improved math scores.  Because of its great success, plans are underway to increase the number of students using the lab each day next year.

This year, using the Greenfield Middle School Lab as a model, another Rotary-supported lab at Cajon Valley Middle School was designed.  With funds from this year’s grant, equipment was purchased and the lab began operating in April, 2003.  With the continued assistance of Rotary Club funds, this lab will be in full operation in September, 2003.

·   Vocational Support.  For the past five years, annual grants of $1,000 each, have been awarded to the Cajon Valley Middle School Landscape and Gardening Program.  Students learn gardening, landscaping, and various other horticulture-related skills.  Irrigation plans, electronic watering systems, landscape designs, rock and concrete work, and shade structures have been constructed by students with the supervision of a teacher who used Rotary funds to purchase materials.  Plans are underway to expand this program to for partnerships with Grossmont/Cuyamaca Community College students and professional landscapers in San Diego County with a goal of expanding students' interest in horticulture careers.

  ·   RYLA.  The El Cajon Rotary Club actively supports and participates in the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards recognizing excellence in youth leadership.  The award is an all-expense paid weekend conference providing high school juniors an incentive to improve their leadership abilities in order to build better schools and communities.
