Becoming a Rotarian

An association of some 30,000 autonomous clubs in more than 160 countries, Rotary International is one of the world's largest service organizations. The goal for a club's membership is an up-to-date and progressive representation of the community's business, vocational, and professional interests.

An important distinction between Rotary and other organizations is that membership in Rotary is by invitation. Rotary clubs invite individuals to join and become members.

Membership is vital to a Rotary club's operations and community service activities. A primary goal of the club is to continually expand the club with committed members who have the interest and ability to get involved in service and humanitarian projects. Prospective members must:

  • hold — or be retired from — a professional, proprietary, executive, or managerial position;

  • have the capacity to meet the club's weekly attendance or community project participation requirements;

  • live or work within the locality of the club or the surrounding area.

The Membership Process
Often a person being considered for membership is invited by a member/sponsor to attend one or more club meetings to learn more about Rotary. The sponsor may then submit the name of the candidate to the club's membership committee.

An individual who is interested in membership but doesn't know any Rotarians can contact our club directly.

Classifications:
Professional Representation
Rotary uses a classification system to establish and maintain a vibrant cross-section or representation of the community's business, vocational, and professional interests among members and to develop a pool of resources and expertise to successfully implement service projects. This system is based on the founders' paradigm of choosing cross-representation of each business, profession, and institution within a community.

A classification describes either the principal business or the professional service of the organization that the Rotarian works for or the Rotarian's own activity within the organization. Some examples of classifications include: high schools, universities, eye surgery, banking, pharmaceutical-retailing, petroleum-distribution, and insurance agency.

Attendance Rules

A primary obligation undertaken by anyone who joins ROTARY is-ATTENDANCE! Attendance rules are summarized below:

  1. All members of the club (exceptions noted below) must be counted either present of absent at every meeting, and attendance is based on a check of the badge rack.

  2. Any member who is absent, but who attends the regular meetings of any other Rotary Club on any of the 14 days immediately preceding the day of absence, on the day of absence itself, on any of the 14 days immediately following the day of absence, may be given full credit for attendance. Such makeup attendance at another meeting should be reported in writing by the secretary of the host club. If this is not done, the visiting member may make his own report.

  3. The membership of any member who is absent from four consecutive regular weekly meetings of the club shall be automatically terminate, unless such absence is made up or is excused by the board of directors for good and sufficient reason. (See By-laws, Art. IX)

  4. The membership of any member whose attendance is less the 60 percent during the first or second six months of the club's fiscal year shall automatically terminate, unless excused by the Board of Directors for good and sufficient reason.

  5. An excused leave of absence granted by the Board of Directors will operate to prevent a forfeiture of membership, but will not operate to give El Cajon Rotary Club credit for the member's attendance. The excused member must be recorded as absent unless he or she attends a regular meeting at some other club.

  6. The only members to whom the above rules of compulsory attendance do not apply are Honorary Members, and Senior Active and Past Service Members who have reached age 65 and have completed 20 years of Rotary Service and Senior Rotarians. Other Senior Active and Past Service Members may be excluded from the above rules during a protracted illness or physical impairment, upon application to the Board of Directors.
