St. Madeleine's Receives Rotary-Labeled TablesOn November 16, 2024, members of the Rotary Club of El Cajon refurbished picnic tables that had been previously donated to St. Madeleine Sophie's Center. Some tables were so rotted they had to be replaced. After construction and refurbishment, club members painted them. Once dry, the Rotary emblem was stenciled onto the tables before they were returned to the center for use. Visitors to the center will mostly find these tables in the garden area. The Rotary Club of El Cajon has long supported St. Madeleine Sophie's Center. |

His detailed narrative recounted the hardships his parents faced and highlighted the kindness and generosity of those who helped them flee Austria and eventually settle in the United States. |
Rotarians Volunteer at Feeding AmericaIn San Diego County, more than 350,000 individuals struggle with hunger, while 38% of the food produced is wasted. Feeding San Diego is committed to ensuring that those facing hunger receive nutritious meals through efficient food rescue operations. The food is often sourced from large grocery stores, which donate products that cannot be sold due to shelf-life constraints, discoloration, irregularities, or excess inventory. This food undergoes a sorting process to remove any spoiled items before it is packaged for distribution. This past month, The El Cajon Rotary Club took on the task of sorting pears and, with the help of other volunteers, succeeded in preparing 9,200 pounds of pears to be distributed among 3,000 families. |
Rotarians Headed to EnsenadaOn November 1, Club members will embark on their annual journey to the Thousand Smiles facility in Ensenada, Mexico. Their mission is to deliver the finest care, education, and ongoing support to children in need and their families. Governor's Visit InspiringOn August 27, District Governor Dianne Crawford visited the club and recounted her mother's life work. After her time in the US, she dedicated herself to serving those in need on the Caribbean Island where she was born and to which she later returned. For her efforts she earned the highest honor a civilian can receive from the French government - the National Order of Merit. Separated by a vast ocean, Dianne was oblivious to the extent of her mother's endeavors. She was profoundly moved and humbled upon learning her mother's story, which prompted her to reassess her life and ultimately decide to devote herself to service in San Diego via Rotary's initiatives. Dianne's dedication to service shone through as she presented her vision for her tenure as Governor of District 5340. With a primary focus on membership, she detailed her strategy, which includes initiatives for community engagement, youth empowerment, global outreach, innovation, adaptation, and the growth and retention of members. In her discussion with the board, she extended her support to the club in enhancing its membership and in celebrating the club's illustrious 99-year legacy. |

Club & Guests to Tour Advanced Water Purification Project in SanteeIn lieu of its September 17 meeting, El Cajon Rotarians and invited guests will have the opportunity to tour the $950 million East County Water Purification Project in Santee, hosted by Padre Dam Water Board president, Bill Pommering, a member of the Santee-Lakeside Rotary Club. The East County Advanced Water Purification Program will create a new, local, sustainable and drought-proof drinking water supply by using state-of-the-art technology to purify recycled water. This will produce up to 30 percent of the region's drinking water. Work for the entire project is expected to be complete in late 2025 with purified water production to begin in 2026. In the works for about a decade, the project will take about 15 million gallons of wastewater now pumped daily to the Pt. Loma treatment plant and put it through an extensive filtration and purification process before it’s sent to Lake Jennings, treated once more, and then delivered to local homes and businesses. Club Grant Cycle for 2024-25 BeginsThe El Cajon Rotary Grant Cycle has commenced. The updated application is now available for members upon request. Sandy will bring the grant application forms to our meeting on July 2 for you to take. Remember, the deadline to submit grant applications is August 15! We will be holding a non-attendance gala to fundraise for this effort. We aim to award numerous grants with significant amounts to the qualifying and chosen organizations. This year, our non-attendance gala will be supported by donations from club members and any interested individuals in the community. The Foundation has pledged a 3-to-1 match to help us reach a funding amount comparable to that of last year. Contributing early will aid in determining the number of beneficiaries we can support this year. Donations can be made to the El Cajon Foundation by check, or online contributions can be processed through Sandy. |
We have a New District GovernorJuly 1 begins a new Rotary year. As is customary, a new year brings new leadership. As leadership transitions, the baton must be passed. We are very appreciative of the outstanding leadership that was afforded us by the now Past District Governor Don Fipps. Assuming the role of District Governor for 2024-2025 is District Governor-Elect Dianne Crawford, a member of the Rotary Club of Southeast San Diego. Dianne was joined by numerous family members at the Governor’s Dinner, with several more attending via Zoom. Her grandson Kingston had the honor of inducting her as the new District Governor. In keeping with tradition, the outgoing leadership hands over their pin to their successor. Dianne presented her pin to Luis Carranza, the new Governor-Elect; Luis then passed his to Jeb Bakke, the new Governor Designee. The evening concluded with the exchange of club banners. Dianne's visit to the El Cajon Rotary Club is slated for August 27. Please mark your calendars now so we can give her a well-attended warm welcome. |
Annie Broke Her LegThe news might sound like a song title, but it's indeed true: Annie Johnston fractured her leg while in Mexico with her sister and a friend. Dave has gone to assist her during this difficult time. Regrettably, due to her condition, he was unable to fly her home, necessitating surgery in Mexico. Fortunately, the surgery was successful. Dave has secured a bed and breakfast for their stay as Annie recuperates and until she can safely travel by air. Annie is handling the situation bravely and has even shared a photo to express her gratitude for everyone's kind thoughts and well-wishes. She assures everyone that she is doing well.

Rotarians Volunteer at Thousand Smiles Clinic in EnsenadaMembers of the El Cajon Rotary Club traveled south to Ensenada to lend a hand at the Thousand Smiles Clinic. Tasked with shopping and providing lunches for the volunteers, club members provided sandwiches and all accompaniments on Friday and chili and salad on Saturday. Members also had the opportunity to meet and talk to other Rotarians and volunteers as well as get a glimpse of the many services provided to young ones who otherwise would never receive care. This particular weekend, with school out on Friday, the clinic registered over 120 children to receive care. Families lined up outside starting in wee hour of the morning. Children were screened and provided basic exams and education on Friday with approximately 20 children returning on Saturday for necessary surgeries or more complicated procedures. Volunteer professional staff included dentists, an ENT physician, anesthesiologist, audiologist, hygienists, dental students and nurses. Alongside Rotarians were community members both local and US based who provided meal preps, basic education and much more. The Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary club is likely to have a new Rotarian soon as a result of a first-time community volunteer who learned about Rotary and saw first-hand that Rotarians are People of Action! El Cajon Rotary Club has a long-standing relationship with the Thousand Smiles Foundation providing volunteers, purchasing a commercial grade stove and building picnic tables for outside breaks and dining. |

Amongst these was the first"Rotarian" magazine. In the past it was titled "The National Rotarian". In it Paul Harris discusses the unique importance of "toleration". In order for us to be a successful club, Paul Harris said he would shout, "TOLERATION"! This is what he viewed as one of tenets for the continuance of Rotary. We should not forget this.
Paul Harris also stated that we are "without precedent as a club" due to the fact that we "have no rules except such have been gathered from the creative imaginations...". In other words let's be creative and not fall on the sword of rules.
Paul Harris goes on for a page stating the importance of business in Rotary and defending it against those he calls out as "Mr Ethical Standard". "No true Rotarian ever permits his tail feathers to droop just because some outsider makes the remark that business is one of the KEY notes of Rotary."
